Romney Tops GOP Field in Latest Poll, but Perry and Bachmann Show Momentum

leave a comment »

The latest poll on the horse race for the Republican presidential nomination shows Mitt Romney still leading the field, though having lost a little ground, while support grew for two others — Michele Bachmann, who has announced, and Texas Gov. Rick Perry who hasn’t.

Romney polled 18 percent among likely Republican primary voters in a Fox News poll conducted June 26-28, down from 23 percent earlier this month.

But surging into second place was Perry at 13 percent. There have been several press reports over the last week that Perry had decided to run although his office disputed those, saying he had not made up his mind. Other reports have said Perry will make clear his intentions after the July 4 holiday.

Michele Bachmann, who has enjoyed a lift in the polls since her performance at the Republican debate and her official announcement, was in third place at 11 percent, up from the 4 percent she received in the previous survey.

There continued to be bad news for Tim Pawlenty and Newt Gingrich. Despite campaigning intensively long before other contenders started to ramp up their effort, Pawlenty lost ground in the Fox poll, falling from 5 percent to 3 percent. And Gingrich, who has so far run a star-crossed race and, in the process, angered elements of the party, dropped from 7 percent to 3 percent.
