Voters Say that Super PAC Spending Is Having a Negative Effect on the 2012 Campaign

As South Carolinians get inundated in advance of Saturday’s primary by mostly negative TV ads funded by super PACS, a Pew Research Center poll conducted Jan. 11-16 found that those voters who are aware of the 2010 Supreme Court “Citizens United” ruling that paved the way for this kind of spending overwhelmingly say it has had a negative impact.

Fifty-four percent of registered voters nationwide said they had heard about the high court ruling that overturned government restrictions on how much corporations and individuals could spend as long as the outlays were not coordinated with a candidate’s campaign.

Among those who had heard a little or a lot about the ruling, 65 percent said the super PAC spending has had a negative effect. Seventy-eight percent of those who said they had heard “a lot” about the ruling held that view.

There was no partisan divide when it came to seeing the effect of the new rules as negative. More than six-in-ten Democrats, Republicans and independents shared that view.
